The Master of Music at Fontys School of Fine and Performing Arts in Tilburg, the Netherlands, is an advanced degree program for highly gifted musicians who seek a career as a professional performer on the international concert stage. The unique dimension of the Master of Music at Fontys is the personalized component: students receive a two-year scholarship and can tailor the program in accordance with the needs of their emerging career. Students may use their scholarship for taking courses with professors at Fontys and even with external professors and artists.
Accreditation and reviews
The joint Master of Music program at Fontys and the Maastricht Academy of Music has been accredited by the NVAO, the organization for accreditation in higher education in the Netherlands and Flanders. The Master of Music leads to the accredited M.Mus. degree. In 2015, the Dutch HBO-Keuzegids Guide selected the Master of Music program at Fontys as the number 1 in the Netherlands.
Content of the program
The master offers you an intensive two-year program. The core program consists of international masterclasses, individual lessons, and lectures on research skills, cultural entrepreneurship, music philosophy and music marketing.

What to expect from us?
You will be supervised by your main professor, our personal career coach, and a research coach. As a Master of Music student at Fontys, you receive a two-year personal budget. The personal budget amount depends on your specialization. In the academic year 2017-2018 the personal budget ranged from €3000 to €4000 per year for students in their first and second year of study. You can use your personal budget to personalize the curriculum in accordance with your artistic and professional needs.
Students who wish to take lessons with artists who teach outside Fontys may use their scholarship to do so, even when the artist is based in another country. The school maintains strong connections with local concert halls and venues. Therefore, as a student, you will have ample performance opportunities in the region.
What do we expect from you?
Before the entrance exam, it is important to think about your career goals. In your personal development plan, you outline your professional goals for the upcoming years of study. This plan supports your personal qualities and interests and sketches where you see yourself as a professional in two years. Your plan will be evaluated by the exam commission and is part of the application procedure.
Prerequisite for admission is a Bachelor of Music degree or equivalent. As the Master of Music program is taught in English, students have to prove to have sufficient command of the English language.
For international students, English proficiency can be demonstrated through at least a 5,5 score in an IELTS test.
Some applicants may be exempted from submitting language proficiency test results, as follows:
- applicants from a country where English is the official language.
- applicants who have a diploma in secondary education from an EU country who have completed English at graduation level.
After your application to the Master of Music, you will be invited for an audition and an interview. The practical audition forms the core of your admission to the program. In addition, all applicants must submit a personal development plan, sketching their professional plans for the upcoming years of study.
In the overview of classical, jazz, pop, music theater and vocal leadership majors, you will find the admission requirements for your major. For students living outside the EU, video auditions are possible.
