Build specialised skills to support individuals

The Master of Education (Special Education, Advanced) thoroughly prepares educators to support individuals with a range of special educational needs in mainstream classrooms and fills a much-needed gap in professional development for teachers in the field.

The Master of Education (Special Education, Advanced) takes a Design Thinking approach to analyse issues and challenges faced by persons with a range of additional learning needs. In particular, it focuses on problem-solving, informed by advanced theoretical knowledge, from a person first perspective.

The course highlights three distinct streams; all of which address the challenges and issues faced by mainstream teachers in 21st Century educational practice:

  • Autism stream – provides educators with advanced knowledge and skills in supporting individuals with Autism
  • Mental Health stream – provides educators with advanced knowledge and skills in supporting individuals with Mental Health challenges, in particular, the three most prominent issues facing contemporary educators, Anxiety, Depression and Eating Disorders
  • Learning stream – provides educators with advanced knowledge and skills in supporting individuals with a range of learning needs.

Graduates of the Master of Education (Special Education, Advanced) can progress to further postgraduate studies in related fields of education. They can also pursue advanced career options within the education profession, such as Lead Teacher status and leadership opportunities within schools and other educational establishments. In particular, this course provides graduates with a depth of knowledge and expertise in meeting the needs of all students within mainstream educational settings, which has application across all subject areas, in primary and secondary school contexts.

KEY STUDY OUTCOMES:

  • Master “first-person” perspective to critically analyse and problem solve obstacles associated with special educational needs
  • Critically analyse and reflect on biases, prejudices and assumptions associated with special educational needs in society
  • Advanced understanding of Allied Health, carer support and collaboration skills necessary to improve educational outcomes
  • Mastery of research skills relevant to educational needs within mainstream educational settings
  • Employ complex cognitive, technical and creative skills for project-based or research-based change/transformation

Admissions criteria

GENERAL ADMISSIONS CRITERIA

The standard entry requirement for a postgraduate program is a completed qualification at AQF Level 7 Bachelor’s degree or above from an Australian University or an equivalent overseas higher education qualification.

Special entry requirements

Demonstrated ability to undertake study at this level.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ADMISSIONS CRITERIA

Torrens University Australia welcomes students from all over the world. International students living in Australia can only attend our Melbourne campus. Students are required to study full-time but you have the option to complete up to 25% of the course online.

To gain entry into a course at Torrens University Australia, international applicants must satisfy the University’s English Language Requirements

Approved English tests include:

  • IELTS 7.0, with no subscore less than 6.5 (or equivalent TOEFL, CAE or PTE)

Workload and assessment

NO. OF TIMETABLED HOURS PER WEEK:

It is expected that each subject, whether studied online or on-campus, will involve a combined total of 120 hours of structured and self-directed learning, which equates to approximately 10 hours a week for subjects over 12-week trimesters.
