The Department offers the M.S. degree in mathematics. Options for this degree are predoctoral studies, applied mathematics, computer science, secondary math, and statistics. Since 1968, almost 160 Masters degrees have been awarded. The curriculum stresses both theoretical and computational mathematics and is flexible enough to key a student's program to individual interests and abilities. Receiving a well-rounded mathematical education graduates pursue Ph.D.'s, secure a position in government or industry, or further a teaching career. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics, in cooperation with Rhodes University (Grahamstown, South Africa), facilitates a cooperative Ph.D. in pure or applied mathematics for truly exceptional students wishing to pursue doctorate in research areas represented by the combined graduate mathematics faculties of Rhodes University and Youngstown State University. Upon successful completion of all doctoral work, the Ph.D. is granted by Rhodes University. Campus and Facilities Youngstown State University is a state-assisted university located in northeastern Ohio, midway between Cleveland and Pittsburgh. The beautiful, unified campus has a lively calendar of cultural events and recreational opportunities. Enrollment was about 15,200 students in Fall 2010. The Department of Chemistry offers a program of study leading to the M.S. degree with concentrations available in the following areas of chemistry: analytical chemistry, biochemistry, chemistry education, inorganic chemistry, materials chemistry, organic chemistry, and physical chemistry. Degree Requirements A minimum of 35 semester hours of credit is required for the MS degree. Chemistry 6975, 6980, 6981, and 6982 are required of all students. Additionally, 9 to 15 semester hours of content courses are required, depending upon performance in placement exams. A minimum of 6 hours of 6990 is also required for the degree. Teaching assistants must register each semester for Chemistry 6976, 6977 or 6978 as assigned by the Department Chairperson. For graduation, the student must achieve a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher in chemistry and must complete an acceptable thesis. Content courses are those with specialized chemistry content, including the advanced and special-topics courses in the chemistry divisions. Fifteen s.h. of content courses are required, at least nine s.h. of which must be at the 6900 level. These and the electives (which may include additional credits in Chem 6990) are chosen in consultation with the student’s advisor. The graduate program in the Department of Biological Sciences at Youngstown State University leads to a Master of Science degree with opportunities in a wide variety of fields. The program seeks to develop the qualities of independent thinking and problem solving skills, with a goal of preparing students for research and academic careers. The Biology Faculty Research Profiles provides brief descriptions of the Biology faculty research interests. Students may pursue the M.S. degree in Biological Sciences in one of two options. The Thesis Option is a research-intensive program designed to provide students a strong foundation in fundamental biological principles and theories through coursework and the completion of a faculty-guided research project (thesis). The Non-thesis Option allows students to gain an in-depth understanding of biology through coursework and the writing of a graduate research paper.
