Rapid urbanization and relentless globalization threaten to erode, diminish, and erase the cultural heritage (tangible and intangible) along with irreparable destruction to the natural environment of places. We believe that a deeper understanding and engagement with the cultural heritage and natural environment and ecology of particular locales will lead to creative and innovative strategies to protect heritage values while reaching for inclusive and sustainable goals in the design of urban landscapes. The Master of Planning in Urban Design, Sustainability, and Conservation, prepares students with the knowledge and skills to understand and analyze urban areas as spatial structures, social networks, cultural landscapes, and service systems, and to design better, and more inclusive and sustainable urban environments responsive to the particular natural and cultural identities and heritage of the place. The course is a program of the UNESCO Chair in Culture, Habitat, and Sustainable Development at Srishti. As such, students will gain familiarity with international (and national) norms and standards in heritage management including the World Heritage Convention. They will also explore new approaches to managing and designing with heritage to benefit local communities, plan better places, and nurture cultural entrepreneurship compatible with heritage values of particular places Cycle Project workshop organized by Srishti and Premsela as part of the DutchDFA program. The program is aimed at creative art practitioners interested in a variety of media and modalities. Specifically, the program invites students and practitioners interested in exploring the cognitive, visual, experimental, scientific, interactive, and narrative aspects of the sciences and technology. M.Des. in Information Arts and Information Design Practice We preserve and transmit culture, language and all historical record, whether myth or real, using the power of narrative. Narrative or stories that are not just the oral and the written, but in art, in dance, music and drama, embracing philosophy, history, politics, the environment and the social sciences. The Information Arts and Information Design Course at Srishti will explore the idea that all data is narrative. Information is narrative, but with purposefulness. Stories craft our identity, they heal, inform, challenge and are the stuff of which our lives are made of. Traditional boundaries of the narrative are constantly broken in the interfaces of the global and the local, the traditional and the contemporary. Access to information is making the physical boundaries of the world we live in permeable. With multiple screens, constant connectivity, social and mass media has taken on a completely new form. The narrative has become all-pervasive, whether it be complex data that is to be effectively disseminated to diverse audiences, using diverse media, or it be used as a tool for research with communities in flux. Within Spaces’ is a poetic journey through the picturesque landscape of the Andamans. Chaitali Pai has used watercolors to portray the fluidity of water and the wax paintings reveal the motions of sand and water during tides. From a knowledge-based society, the challenge is to move to a wisdom-based society. To this end, we seek to find ways to seamlessly draw from the essence and spirit of the jester, the bard and the wandering minstrels in our modern guises. In that, the Information Arts and Information Design program is about crafting oneself as a storyteller, a behroopiya, whose stories are crafted through the fine lenses of time and space, cultures and contexts, information, knowledge and the extraction of wisdom. Skills and tools will be picked up along the way, however “application” of design principles in the context of real-world design problems will be the primary mode of learning. Discussion-based learning, learning by teaching, and project-based learning are some of pedagogical tools employed to create insights into real-life situations and industry needs. How can we improve such places and benefit their communities in ways that are compatible with the heritage values? How can places, their cultural and natural assets inform and inspire design and creative practices? How can we support local communities to manage their inheritance? Students also learn to derive knowledge and principles of design from cultural and natural heritage places to explore new ways that contemporary creative practices including architecture and urban design can be informed and enriched by history, culture, ecology, tradition, community, and craft. The program is a vibrant multidisciplinary platform for theoretical and practical engagement in context-specific fieldwork to engage a range of academic studies from architecture and urban design to the humanities, cultural geography, management, entrepreneurship, and tourism. The course is a program of the UNESCO Chair in Culture, Habitat, and Sustainable Development at Srishti. As such, students will gain familiarity with international (and national) norms and standards in heritage management including the World Heritage Convention.
